Who doesn’t enjoy apple crumble during a crisp fall day? This Apple Crisp is amazing and delicious and very easy to make. You can enjoy it for breakfast with a cup of tea or coffee, or it can be the perfect dessert for the Thanksgiving dinner.
For this recipe I used three Fuji apples (you can use any type of apple you have around; Fuji is just one of our favorites).
Apple Filling
To make the filling, you will need 3 apples, 1 Tbsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp nutmeg, 1/4 cup of oat flour, 3 Tbsp unsweetened applesauce, and 2 Tbsp maple syrup. Before you start preheat the oven to 350 F.
Peel the apples and cut them in cubes. Add cinnamon and nutmeg, and mix with the cut apples until are evenly covered with cinnamon. Next, add the oat flour and mix it in with the apples (if you don’t have any lying around, you can make your own oat flour in a matter of minutes, by using a blender or a food processor. Add about 1 cup of rolled oats or old fashioned oats to the blender and blend for few seconds, until they are ground into flour like consistency ).
Add the applesauce and maple syrup and mix in with the apples and spices. Applesauce can be replaced by adding a little bit more maple syrup or 1-2 Tbsp of water. Add the filling to a 9 inch pan. I used a 9X8X2 inch pan.
Crumble Topping
To make the crumble, mix in a bowl 2 cups of rolled oats, 1/2 cup oat flour, 1/4 cup turbinado sugar, 3 tbsp coconut oil (softened or melted), 1/2 cup of coconut milk + two more tbsp of coconut milk, 1/2 Tbsp of cinnamon. Mix all ingredients together, until there is no more dry oatmeal. Add the wet oatmeal mixture on top of the apple filling. Bake for 20 mins at 350 F.
Notes: If you don’t have turbinado sugar or you want to avoid sugar altogether, you can replace it with maple syrup. You can start with 2 tablespoons, and increase as desired. If using maple syrup or a liquid sweetener, you might need to adjust the coconut milk amount.
If you don’t have coconut milk, you can replace it with water or apple juice – the same ratio.
