Even though fall hasn’t arrived here yet, there has been 100 degrees just yesterday, the stores have started selling apples, pumpkins, you know all the fall produce. So, I started baking fall desserts, at least I can pretend is already fall. One of our fall favorite dessert is Apple Crisp or Apple Crumble. It’s so popular that has been requested before instead of a birthday cake.
Since, I make it sometimes for breakfast and try to limit sugar intake, I kept it low sugar, so it’s not super sweet. Actually, most desserts on this blog are not super sweet. Feel free to add more sugar or sweetener if you need it to be sweeter.
In this version, I added some frozen cherries, making it an Apple Cherry Crumble. However, you can make it with just apples.
This Healthy Apple Crisp is Vegan and Gluten-free and made with healthy and inexpensive ingredients.
Ingredients and Directions for this Healthy Apple Crisp
Ingredients you need:
Apples (we do love Fuji Apples, but any kind works)
Turbinado sugar or Coconut Sugar
Fresh or Frozen Cherries (Optional)
Directions for this Apple Cherry Crumble
Step 1
Wash, peel, and cut the apples in small cubes.
Step 2
Add 1 tbsp. of cinnamon, 1/4 tsp. of nutmeg, and 2 tbsp. of turbinado sugar or coconut sugar and mix them in with the apples.
Step 3
Add 2 tbsp. of oat flour and mix in.
Step 4
Add 2 tbsp. of water and mix in with the apples until there is no longer any dry oat flour. If you still have dry flour, add another tbsp. of water.
Step 5
If using, add the fresh or frozen cherries to the apple filling. Add the apple and cherry filling to a pie pan. The one I used is about 8 to 9 inches.
Step 6
Making the Apple Crisp Topping. Add 2 cups of rolled oats, 1/4 cup of oat flour, 1/4 cup of turbinado sugar, and 1/2 tbsp. of cinnamon. Mix all together.
Step 7
Add 1/3 cup of water and mix in, until all the oats and flour are no longer dry.
Step 8
Add the topping over the filling, until all the filling is covered. Bake it at 350F for about 20 minutes.
Note: You can make your own oat flour with a high speed blender. You just add rolled oats to a blender and blend for about 3 to 5 seconds, or until all oats turn to flour. My favorite blenders are Vitamix and Ninja. I have been using Ninja for a long time, and even though it doesn’t do everything Vitamix is able to do, it works amazingly well for a budget blender.
