Ingredients and Directions you need to make Dairy-Free Hot Chocolate Bombs

The great news is that you only need 3 ingredients to make these chocolate bombs, and thanks to amazing brands they made it easy to create allergy friendly hot chocolate bombs. I added links to some of my favorite brands, but I know there are probably other great small brands that are worth mentioning that make great healthy and allergy friendly products.

Vegan Chocolate Bar that is dairy-free and soy-free (fair-trade is the best)  – When you look for a chocolate bar, you want to be sure that is semi-sweet or dark chocolate. You want it to contain enough cocoa butter that will melt and mold easy for the chocolate bombs. The good news is that most vegan chocolate bars contain cocoa butter in them. I love  this brand  that not only is dairy-free but also soy-free, gluten-free and fair -trade.

Vegan Dairy-free Hot Chocolate Mix  – I love this hot chocolate mix from Wildly Organic. It is made from high quality sustainable sourced raw organic fermented cocoa powder, dairy-free organic coconut milk powder, and organic coconut sap sugar.

Vegan and Healthy Marshmallows  – these marshmallows are the best. They are made from healthier ingredients that regular marshmallows. Also, they are corn-free, gluten-free, and non-GMO. They even taste so much better than regular ones.

Supplies:

Chocolate bombs molds – you need some kind of molds to make hot chocolate bombs. These silicone ones are great, because they are easy to bend and clean.

Paint brush

Sprinkles with no artificial dye  (Optional)

Coconut flakes (Optional)

Directions on how to make these Dairy-free Chocolate Bombs:

1. Melt and temper the chocolate. There are several ways to temper and melt the chocolate. Most require to have a candy thermometer, which is probably the most accurate way. However, if you don’t have a thermometer you can temper it without it. I will show you how to do it with the stove method without a thermometer. First you want to add a quarter of your chocolate bar. My chocolate bar had 10 pieces of chocolate. I first added 6 pieces to a glass bowl that I set over a pot of hot water. While, the water gets hotter over low heat, keep stiring the chocolate until all the chocolate melted. Once all chocolate has melted, turn the heat off and add half of the remaining chocolate to the bowl (in my case I added 2 pieces). Stir well until the chocolate is all melted. Take the glass bowl off the stove, and add the remaining 2 pieces of the chocolate bar. Mix well the chocolate in the bowl, until the hot melted chocolate, melts the remaining chocolate bar.

2. Add about half a teaspoon of melted chocolate to each mold. Using a clean paint brush, paint a layer of chocolate on your silicone mold. After all the molds are covered with chocolate, add to the freezer for about 5 minutes.

4. Gently take off the molded chocolate from the silicone mold. Add some hot chocolate and marshmallows to one chocolate half. Paint some remaining melted chocolate around the rim of the half chocolate, in order to be able to “glue” the other half to the chocolate bomb. After attaching the other half of the chocolate bomb, paint some more melted chocolate around it. Immediately, roll it through sprinkles or coconut flakes.

Tips to make the best Vegan Hot Chocolate Bombs:

  1. Use high quality chocolate bar that has at least 60% cocoa. The good news is that I found that most vegan chocolate bars are high quality and contain enough cocoa and cocoa butter to make perfect chocolate bombs.
  2. Temper your chocolate. Best and easy way if you do not have a candy thermometer is to be sure you do not heat your chocolate too long.  Also, melt first 1 half of the chocolate bar, only until is all melted. Add 1 quarter of the second half and keep it on the heat until all is melted. Take the bowl of the heat and add the rest of the chocolate bar to the melted chocolate. Stir until all chocolate is melted and smooth.
  3. Use a paint brush to paint layers of chocolate on the mold. After you paint one layer, add to the fridge until the  layer hardened.
  4. If you want to avoid leaving too many finger prints on the chocolate bombs, use a cupcake liner to put the them in, while you assembly them.
  5. Sprinkles are popular to use to decorate the chocolate bombs. However, if you want to avoid the extra sugar, you can use coconut flakes to decorate them.
  6. If the chocolate halves are not even and leave a gap when they get attached, you can add a plate over a pot with hot water, until the plates gets warm. Add one half of the chocolate bomb to the plate for few second and gently rotate to the left or right. This will melt the chocolate a little bit and make the ends even. Be careful if plate is too hot, the chocolate will melt fast.
  7.  If you are not planning to sell these chocolate bombs, instead of adding hot chocolate you can add a small surprise like a small toy or candy inside the chocolate bomb, and turn it into a kinder surprise. However, the person receiving it, might just want to eat the chocolate bomb instead of melting it.

Course: Deserts
Cuisine: American
Keyword: chocolate bombs, hot chocolate bombs, vegan hot chocolate bombs
Servings: 8 chocolate bombs (1 1/2 inch)
Instructions
  1. Add a small saucepan with water over low heat. Add a glass bowl over the pan. Be sure, the glass bowl does not touch the bottom of the pan, and water or steam does not reach in the glass bowl.

  2. Add about 3/5 of the chocolate bar to the glass bowl. My chocolate bar had 10 pieces, so I added 6 of them.

  3. Stir well until all the chocolate is melted.

  4. As soon as the chocolate is melted, turn the heat off and add half of the remaining chocolate bar. If you have 4 pieces left, add 2 of them. Mix well until the new chocolate is melted.

  5. Take the glass bowl off the heat. Add the remaining 2 more pieces. Stir until all chocolate is melted and smooth.

  6. Add about 1/2 teaspoon of chocolate to each mold. Using a clean paint brush paint a layer of chocolate over each mold.

  7. Add the mold to the freezer for 5 minutes.

  8. Paint another layer of chocolate over each mold. Be sure you add extra to the sides and top of the mold. Chocolate tends to collect at the bottom and not enough on the sides.

  9. Add the mold back to the freezer for about 5 minutes.

  10. Gently push each chocolate mold from the back until it separates from the silicone mold. If chocolate is tempered correctly, it should come off easily.

  11. Add the half of the chocolate bombs in cupcake holders in order to minimize fingerprints on the hot chocolate bombs. You can also use gloves.

  12. Fill one half of the chocolate bomb with hot chocolate mix and marshmallows.

  13. Paint a layer of chocolate over the top rim of the half of the chocolate bomb. Immediately, attach the other half to it. The melted chocolate will act as a seal.

  14. Once the chocolate bomb is assembled, paint some melted chocolate around the chocolate bomb. Roll through some sprinkles or coconut flakes. Skip this step, if you do not plan to have sprinkles or coconut flaxes around the chocolate bomb.

  15. Add the chocolate bombs to hot coconut or almond milk or hot water.

Recipe Notes

If you use  1 1/2 inch  molds for your chocolate bombs, you will probably need to add 3-4 chocolate bombs to a cup of milk to make hot chocolate.
